A client asks for "that screen-printed look," you hand back a file, and something reads as wrong before anyone can name it. The dots are all there. The tone breaks where it should. But every dot has the same edge, the same angle, the same clean circumference, and the whole thing has the sterile evenness of a spreadsheet. That's Photoshop's Color Halftone filter doing exactly what it was built to do: lay down a mathematically perfect grid. The problem is that a real print is never mathematically perfect. Ink spreads when it's forced through mesh. Screens slip a fraction of a millimetre between passes. Dots at the shadow end choke together instead of holding their shape. A filter can fake the grid. It has no way to fake the ink.
That gap is where hand-drawn halftone brushes earn their place in a workflow. They're forgiving of the small angle drift that any hand-registered job carries, and they soften the impact of moire when layers overlap.
Moire is the other half of this. When two colour layers' dot grids sit at conflicting angles, they interfere and you get wavy, plaid-like distortion across the artwork. Classic separations dodge it by spacing each layer at its own angle, something like 15, 45, 0 and 75 degrees, so no two grids line up and beat against each other. You don't need to reproduce that maths by hand, but it explains the single most useful instinct when picking a halftone brush: a perfectly repeating grid, the kind you'd get from a tiled CSS pattern, reads as digital immediately. Slight hand variation in dot spacing mimics the small imperfection of a screen sitting at an angle, and that irregularity is what sells the process.
