Liquid Glass Design Failed Its Own Usability Tests. Designers Are Using It Anyway.

Nielsen Norman Group published a piece with the headline "Liquid Glass Is Cracked, and Usability Suffers in iOS 26," and the word cracked is doing real work there: the material's legibility falls apart in live, moving, tap-driven use, exactly where Apple needs it to hold. Over on r/UXDesign, practitioners were asking the blunter version of the question in a thread titled "Besides visual, what problems does liquid glass solve?", flagging the performance and accessibility costs against a payoff that's mostly optical. So the design world's one substantial critical take on the biggest iOS visual overhaul since iOS 7 is a usability takedown. And yet the look is spreading fast across branding decks, social content, packaging renders and album art. That gap makes sense once you notice what those uses have in common: none of them have to stay readable while scrolling behind a live camera feed at 120fps.

Search "liquid glass design" today and page one is Apple's own newsroom post, the developer docs, the WWDC session video, a Wikipedia entry, and the NN/g piece. Nobody is writing about Liquid Glass as a material you can pick up and put to work outside a phone screen. The material itself has barely made it into a studio yet.

What Liquid Glass Is, Optically

Glassmorphism as we've known it since the Big Sur and Windows 11 era is a translucent panel with a background blur behind it. Frosted, flat, easy to reason about. Liquid Glass adds physics. As freefrontend.com puts it, the surface carries "a realistic, fluid distortion" achieved through refraction, warping the content underneath instead of only softening it. Apple describes a material that "reflects and refracts its surroundings" while morphing in response to what's happening: tab bars shrink on scroll, then bend the content around themselves when active.

Three things are happening at once. The surface refracts and bends whatever sits behind it. It throws a specular highlight, a hard bright spot where a light source hits the curve. And it deforms as content moves underneath, which gives you that wet, liquid reading. Visily's read is right that this is a continuation of glassmorphism pushed further, an escalation of the frosted look into something with real optical behaviour. It is also, per the same body of criticism, the exact set of properties that turns a live interface into a contrast problem.

Why It Works Better Frozen Than Live

Low contrast, unpredictable legibility, a surface that has to keep reacting to whatever passes under it: those are the failures NN/g documented in a moving UI. Take motion and interaction out of the equation and every one of them flips into an asset. A static logo reveal doesn't need to stay legible while you scroll past it. A product shot has one composition, lit once, resolved. A poster or a packaging render gets to place the refraction and the highlight with intent and then hold them there forever. The material that fights you in an operating system settles down the moment you stop asking it to react in real time.

The interesting part here is the aesthetic outliving the OS feature that popularised it. Apple gave the look a name and a stage, and working designers took the visual grammar somewhere the accessibility argument doesn't apply. This is the same territory we've been tracking in grain, glass and gradient having a moment and in the broader glass, chrome and static hyper-digital swing.

Real Refraction Versus Prompted Refraction

Convincing wet glass carries an optical logic. A creator building a real refraction effect models how light bends through a curved transparent body, then places the specular pass with intent so the highlight lands where the geometry says it should. That's why it reads as glass and not as a sticker. Prompt an AI generator for a "glass UI" image and you get refraction that's physically incoherent: highlights that don't agree with the distortion, bent edges that lead nowhere, because there's no optical model underneath, only pattern-matching against a pile of other glass pictures. The eye clocks the difference immediately even when it can't name it. Built effects hold up under scrutiny because someone did the physics; the generated ones fall apart the second you look at where the light is supposed to be coming from.

The most direct route from the iOS material to a flat file. The Look Has Left the Operating System

Apple is still reworking the material more than a year on. Coverage from mid-August 2026 notes a redesigned Siri icon in the iOS 27 beta with an updated dynamic liquid glass treatment, which tells you the OS-level implementation is still unsettled. That instability is the point: the surface Apple keeps revising in software has already broken loose from the software. Refraction, the specular highlight, depth through distortion, those read as a general-purpose surface treatment now, usable on a poster or a bottle render regardless of what ships in the next beta. If you want more of this material to work with, there's plenty more glass to dig through. The OS feature can stay cracked. The look is doing fine on its own.
