Balium Imprecise — Experimental Imperfect Sans Variable Font
Unio Designs
Description
Balium Imprecise is an experimental sans-serif type system that treats printing errors as structural features. Instead of thinning strokes at junctions, it saturates them with dense black—introducing deliberate visual noise to counter algorithmic uniformity. The name derives from the Latin root for "to dazzle" (abbagliare), using visual excess as a generative principle.
Visual States:
Core: Modernist skeleton with subtle latent flaws.
Filled: Heavy ink saturation across delicate junctions.
Bad Kerning: Disrupted spacing and character collisions.
Bad Kerning Filled: Maximalist typographic tension combining bleed and broken tracking.
Specs & Uses:
Styles: 32 static styles (Roman to Extra Bold across all 4 states, with obliques) and 5 variable font files.
Coverage: 395 glyphs (Western & Central European Latin).
Ideal for: Progressive tech branding, generative art, brutalist posters, underground music, and avant-garde fashion.

Every curve, spacing choice, and structure is crafted for real-world production, giving brands a distinctive, durable identity that stands far apart from off-the-shelf solutions.
