A risograph is a stencil duplicator. Each ink colour rides on its own cylindrical drum, and each drum is wrapped in a master burned through a heat-sensitive stencil, an internal silkscreen. To print two colours, the machine runs the sheet once, swaps drums, and the paper goes back through for the second pass. Multi-colour work means multiple passes, every one of them hand-fed and re-registered by an operator who is close but never exact.
That re-feed is where the drift lives. Two colour layers have to land in the same physical spot on the page, and the second one always arrives a hair off. Riso ink is soy-based and translucent, sitting on top of the paper instead of soaking in and opacifying, so where passes overlap they blend optically and throw secondary colours and uneven density. Most riso machines can't print continuous tone, so photographs get broken into a halftone dot-screen per colour before they ever touch a drum. The visible dots, the halo at the edge where red and cyan part ways, the ink pooling heavier in one corner: each one is a readout of a physical constraint doing its job.
A duotone or gradient-map remap runs as a single mathematical operation across the whole image in one instant. There is no second layer, no separate pass, no paper being fed back through anything, so there is nothing for two colours to argue about. Misregistration is what happens when two real passes needed to agree on a position and couldn't. You can remap colour with a slider, but you can't manufacture the memory of a machine re-feed that never occurred.

Halftoner is our PSD template for exactly that separation: five line, wave and dot patterns, 20 gradient maps, adjustable scale and colour, non-destructive to the image underneath. Why the flaw sells it
The reason print-native imperfection reads as credible right now is that people can see where a flaw came from. A misregistration halo, a visible separation, ink density falling off in one corner: those trace back to a real constraint, and a designer looking closely can tell. A grain layer dropped on for atmosphere or an AI texture generated for vibes has no constraint behind it, and it shows in the way it sits too evenly across the frame. Zines, gig posters and indie sleeves are the reference points people keep returning to because that's where the difference is easiest to read up close. Build the overprint condition itself, and the work holds up under the loupe.
