Marchant 1490

Description
Introducing Marchant 1490: a blackletter font traced from the Dance of Death, printed by Guy Marchant in Paris in 1490. Marchant printed the first known edition of the Dance of Death in 1485, and this Latin edition followed five years later: skeletons leading popes, kings, abbots and fools to the grave, each woodcut paired with verses set in his heavy, uneven type. Every letter of the font comes from that type, ink spread and wear included, scanned from the copy held at the Library of Congress, and each one comes in four printed versions that rotate as you type, so no line ever looks set by a machine. Perfect for album covers, posters, book covers, merch and anything that should look printed by hand five hundred years ago.
Details
734 glyphs: upper and lowercase, numbers, punctuation and symbols, with accents for Western European languages
Four printed versions of every letter, rotating as you type (in Photoshop, switch on Contextual Alternates)
Medieval spelling in Stylistic Set 1: the long s, the 2-shaped r and the book’s own v, x and l

Drawn from Chorea ab eximio Macabro (Paris, 1490)
